Weekly Success Story: A Force for Good: Local Officer Wins National Acclaim for Mental Health Research

We are thrilled to highlight the incredible achievement of PC Holly Cunnington, a recent University of Northampton graduate and a valued officer with Northamptonshire Police. At just 23 years old, Holly has won national recognition for her groundbreaking research into the mental health and wellbeing of frontline police officers.

Holly was awarded the prestigious "Emerging Talent" prize at the Society of Evidence-Based Policing Awards for her final project as part of her Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship. Going above and beyond the course requirements, she conducted primary research, gathering insights from over 100 serving officers to understand the barriers they face when seeking mental health support.

Her vital work has produced key recommendations, such as improving data collection, embedding mental health discussions into performance reviews, and fostering a more open culture around wellbeing within the force. The research is now being considered by the Cultural Change Team at Northamptonshire Police and has gained attention from senior leaders across the country.

Reflecting on her achievement, Holly said, “It's been an absolutely amazing experience. I never expected to win an award for my research... This journey has opened so many doors and I'm proud to be contributing to positive change in policing.”

Chief Superintendent Chris Hillery praised her work, stating, “Holly has looked at a critical issue for policing not just locally but across England and Wales and is a credit to the force... Her initiative in this research project and forethought in examining officer wellbeing will stand her in good stead as she develops her career with us.”

Congratulations, Holly, on this outstanding and well-deserved recognition! Your dedication is already making a real-world impact and paving the way for a healthier, more supportive environment for our frontline heroes.
