Weekly Success Story: North Northamptonshire Council's Innovative Youth Wellbeing Initiative

Who doesn’t want happy kids this summer?!

Breaking new ground in community support, North Northamptonshire Council has launched an innovative summer programme that's putting young people's mental health and wellbeing at the heart of the school holidays.

The Initiative

The Reform UK-led council has created a dual approach to youth engagement this August, combining high-energy silent discos with calming 'Good Vibes Only' wellbeing sessions - all completely free for local families.

What Makes It Special

  • Silent Discos: 45-minute sessions every Friday featuring multi-channel headphones and glow accessories, allowing young people to choose their music whilst staying active

  • Good Vibes Only Sessions: Tuesday wellbeing workshops offering mindful movement, journaling, and creative crafts designed to promote emotional connection

The Impact

Targeting 8-16 year olds during the challenging summer holiday period, the programme addresses two critical needs: keeping young people active and supporting their mental wellbeing when school structure is absent.

Councillor Brian Benneyworth explained the vision: "It's exciting. [The sessions] are designed to encourage positive emotional connection and wellbeing for children and teens."

This initiative demonstrates how forward-thinking local government can directly impact community wellbeing. By offering free, accessible activities that blend fun with mental health support, North Northamptonshire Council is:

  • Removing barriers - completely free participation

  • Addressing real needs - school holiday support for families

  • Innovating delivery - using modern formats like silent discos to engage young people

  • Prioritising wellbeing - recognising mental health as equally important as physical activity
