Weekly Success Story: Top Hat Dance & Theatre School Takes Gold on World Stage!

Northampton's Top Hat Dance & Theatre School has brought home gold from the Dance World Cup in Spain, proving that local talent can compete with the very best in the world.
Founded by Julie McKenna in 2009, Top Hat Dance & Theatre School recently represented England at the prestigious Dance World Cup, where their mini jazz large group of 20 students took first place against what Julie describes as "insane talent" and "the best in the world."
The victory was made even more special when the young performers received their gold medals from none other than Abby Lee Miller, the iconic adjudicator and Dance Moms star.
A Journey from West End to Northampton
Julie's path to founding Top Hat began with her own performing career in the West End. When she reached a crossroads in her acting career - too old for young parts but not old enough for older roles - she was told to "wait it out." Instead, Julie chose to launch her dance and theatre school, keeping her passion for the industry alive while nurturing the next generation of performers.
Having moved to Northampton from Glasgow during her teenage years, Julie knew this was the perfect location for her vision of creating a welcoming, judgement-free space where everyone could thrive.
Building Confidence Through Community
"Everyone feels happy and welcome," Julie explains. "It's such a happy place to work and we're a community. Parents have said thank you for helping to bring up their kids. It takes a village."
The school welcomes students of all abilities - from elite performers to children who attend once a week - offering classes in dancing, singing, musical theatre, and acrobatics. This inclusive approach has created an environment that builds confidence in young people while fostering genuine community spirit.
Outstanding Individual Achievements
The success wasn't limited to the group victory. Nine-year-old soloist Louie delivered an exceptional performance, securing third place in tap, fourth in modern, and eighth in musical theatre. The school's musical theatre large group also impressed, finishing sixth overall, while several other students gained places in associate programmes.
This isn't Top Hat's first taste of international success - they previously secured third place at the Dance World Cup, making this gold medal victory even more meaningful.
Northamptonshire: A Dance Powerhouse
Julie believes their success reflects something special about the local area: "In the grand scheme of things, Northamptonshire has the most successful dance groups and community in the whole of England. There are so many winners on the England and world stages. The young people in this county are very, very talented."
Looking Forward
As Top Hat Dance & Theatre School continues to nurture talent and build community, their world championship success serves as inspiration for young performers across Northamptonshire and beyond, proving that with dedication, support, and the right environment, local talent can shine on the global stage.
