Local Success Story: Esther Stimpson – From First‑in‑Family Student to PhD Trailblazer

Winnie the PAT dog

Thirty‑seven‑year‑old single mum of four, Esther Stimpson, is one of Universities UK’s “100 Faces”—a national campaign celebrating graduates who were the first in their family to attend university. After leaving two full‑time jobs to study an accelerated law degree at the University of Northampton, Esther’s outstanding results earned her the Max Engel Law Memorial Bursary and the confidence to push even further. She is now beginning a PhD investigating maternity services in prisons while working as Project Manager and Healthwatch Lead for Northamptonshire Healthwatch.

Esther’s journey mirrors the impact higher education has on “first‑in‑the‑family” (FitF) students nationwide. New UUK research with 6,000 graduates shows:

  • 73% of FitF graduates say their degree gave them the confidence to apply for jobs without feeling like imposters.

  • 41% couldn’t have afforded university without financial support—equivalent to 1.1 million adults in England and Wales.

With living costs rising, UUK is calling for the reinstatement of maintenance grants so the next generation can follow in Esther’s footsteps. As she puts it, “University has been life‑changing for me and my children. I didn’t know I’d be here four years ago—who knows what’s next?”

Esther’s story is a powerful reminder of how access to higher education can transform lives, families and communities when the right support is in place.
