Local Success Story: St Andrew’s Volunteers (and gorgeous doggies like Winnie) celebrate the King’s Award for Volunteering Services

Winnie the PAT dog

Last Thursday, in a special ceremony in the Great Hall at St Andrew’s, our Voluntary Services team was presented with The King’s Award for Voluntary Service 2024 by the Lord Lieutenant, alongside Lord and Lady Northampton. This award, equivalent to an MBE, is the highest accolade for volunteer groups in the UK, recognizing outstanding work by groups supporting their local communities.

A highlight of the event was the recognition given to our Pets As Therapy (PAT) service, with dogs like Winnie leading the way. Winnie—and the other incredible PAT dogs—volunteer alongside their owners to spend time with patients, bringing comfort and joy in ways that only a furry companion can. Their presence can often reduce stress and anxiety and significantly improve wellbeing.

Why Winnie and Our PAT Dogs Make Such a Difference

  • Stress Relief: Studies show that spending time with animals can help lower blood pressure and reduce stress hormones.

  • Social Connection: Many of our patients have limited visitors; a friendly face (and wagging tail) can help overcome loneliness.

  • Comfort & Joy: Dogs like Winnie create a sense of normalcy and fun, which is essential on the road to recovery.

Volunteering at St Andrew’s

Alongside the weekly social club, onsite shops, and other activities, the Pets As Therapy programme is a central part of our volunteer-led services. Currently, 450 volunteers support our Northampton, Birmingham, and Essex sites. Their generosity, including those who bring pets like Winnie, makes a unique contribution to patient recovery and wellbeing.

Dawn Wright, our Voluntary Services Manager, expressed her pride:

“Our volunteers are so generous and bring a special kind of magic to our patients, contributing to their recovery in a variety of ways. Each and every one of them brings something unique—something that cannot be replicated by staff or family members.

We’re thrilled to receive this award as it sends a strong message to our local community about how vital volunteers are to the people in our care. I couldn’t be any prouder of them and my team for receiving this incredible award.”

Volunteer involvement at St Andrew’s stretches back to at least 1838, and we’re proud to carry on that tradition—now recognised by The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, which was established for Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002 and continued by His Majesty The King. Winners are announced annually on The King’s Birthday, November 14.

Join Our Volunteer Family

Whether it’s making new friends, or gaining new skills, St Andrew’s is open to people of all backgrounds and interests. If you’d like to learn more about how you can get involved, click here. We’d love for you to become part of the team that continues to bring love, laughter, and wagging tails to our patients’ lives.
