Local Success Story: How Workbridge Helped Mark Find Purpose Again

For years, Mark, a lifelong Northampton resident, struggled with severe anxiety that ultimately forced him to leave his career in IT. The stress of his role as a computer programmer became unbearable, leading him to resign in 2020. While he initially felt relief, Mark soon found himself trapped in isolation, only leaving his house for essentials and losing all sense of purpose.

Financial struggles followed, and for the first time, Mark turned to Universal Credit. It was through his Work Coach at the job centre that he learned about Workbridge, the vocational education arm of St Andrew’s Healthcare.

Despite his anxiety, Mark took a leap of faith and joined Workbridge’s five-week Community Skills and Wellbeing course. He signed up for the cooking course, learning to make sourdough and cakes, and rediscovered a sense of self-worth.

“I am still racked with anxiety when I walk through the door, but the people here are so supportive and friendly. After all these years, I feel like I have a purpose again. I’m even considering volunteering at St Andrew’s. Workbridge has helped me start living again.” – Mark

The Impact of Workbridge

Workbridge provides a crucial bridge to employment for people facing mental health challenges, offering practical training and confidence-building opportunities. The programme is made possible through a £60,000 grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, facilitated by West Northamptonshire Council (WNC).

Cllr Daniel Lister, Cabinet Member for Local Economy, Culture, and Leisure at WNC, praised the initiative:

“This story is a powerful reminder of the impact community-focused programmes can have. Through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, we can support life-changing initiatives like Workbridge that give people hope and the opportunity to thrive.”

Referrals to Workbridge can be made via Social Prescription, the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), or self-referral for those who meet the criteria.

Helping People Regain Their Confidence

Jenny Lane, Workbridge Education Manager, highlighted the programme’s ongoing impact:

“For over 40 years, Workbridge has helped people find employment. Mental ill health can be debilitating, but we’re here to inspire hope and show people their true potential.”

Mark’s journey is a testament to the power of supportive community initiatives. He almost backed out of the programme but has since regained his confidence and is now looking toward the future.
