Local Success Story: Patient Recreation Club (PRC) at St Andrews Wins Hope Award for Volunteering

PRC, led by Ken Ainsworth
When the doors to the Patient Recreation Club (PRC) swing open each Thursday evening, you can almost measure the change in atmosphere. For two precious hours, the only agenda is connection, creativity, good-natured fun and laughter.
This is precisely what Ken Ainsworth and his volunteer team set out to achieve when they revived the PRC after Covid. Tables were laid out for crafts, a corner was reserved for board-game battles, and the much-loved PAT dog-tail-wagging therapists in their own right, made their rounds, collecting strokes and sneaky treats in equal measure.
Ken’s secret isn’t complicated: consistency and genuine respect. By opening the club every single week, holidays, staff shortages, power cuts and all, he gives patients something reliable to look forward to, and a positive stepping-stone in their care journey. Volunteers echo that sense of purpose; new recruits often remark that they receive just as much encouragement as they give.
Running on a shoestring budget, the PRC thrives thanks to donated supplies and the occasional home-baked batch of something tasty. Yet the weekly miracle isn’t what’s on the tables, it’s who gathers around them: individuals rediscovering identity, resilience and hope.
And then of course, there is Ken and his merry band of volunteers and, most of all, the patients whose courage makes every Thursday night matter. The PRC isn’t just a club; it’s a testament to what compassion, creativity, and a determined community can do, one game of Connect 4, one shared smile, one gentle pat of a therapy dog at a time.
Worthy winners indeed.

Calling Local Businesses & Community Leaders – Stand with Us for Mental Health on 11 June
St Andrew’s Healthcare is about to embark on its biggest fund-raising journey yet: “The Hope for Mental Health Appeal.” Launching publicly on Wednesday, 11 June 2025, the appeal will fuel two vital missions:
Enhancing every patient’s experience – from therapeutic spaces to creative activities that spark joy and recovery.
Driving pioneering mental-health research – so the breakthroughs discovered in Northampton can change lives nationwide.
We can’t do it alone. That’s why we’re inviting decision-makers from local companies, Rotary clubs, PTAs, parish councils, charities and schools to join us at the launch event and become champions of hope.
Why attend?
See the vision first-hand – meet clinicians, researchers and, most importantly, hear patient stories of transformation.
Shape genuine community impact – explore partnership options tailored to your organisation’s CSR goals.
Network with fellow leaders committed to building a healthier, more resilient Northamptonshire.
How you can help today
Share the invitation with owners, directors, headteachers, committee chairs or anyone who can open doors.
Let us know who’s interested – simply comment below or email [email protected] with names and contact details.
Save the date – 11 June – and watch this space for venue and agenda updates.
Your company’s presence could be the spark that funds a breakthrough therapy, finishes a sensory garden or backs a study that rewrites best practice in mental-health care.
Together, let’s turn hope into action. We can’t wait to welcome you on 11 June and show you how your support will change lives.
Thank you in advance for standing with St Andrew’s – and for keeping hope at the heart of our community.
