Weekly Success Story: Understanding AuDHD: A Growing Conversation on Neurodiversity in Northamptonshire

With a slight change to the weekly success story, we wanted to highlight why so many people are being diagnosed with both autism and ADHD in the county.

Autism and ADHD have long been recognised as distinct neurodevelopmental conditions. But today, there's a growing awareness around AuDHD—a term used to describe the overlap of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although not yet a formal medical diagnosis, AuDHD is gaining attention among clinicians, researchers, and the neurodivergent community alike.

With 50–70% of autistic people also showing signs of ADHD, AuDHD may be even more common than autism or ADHD alone. And for many across Northamptonshire and beyond, this overlap is only just being understood.

What is AuDHD?

AuDHD is a term used to describe individuals who have traits or formal diagnoses of both autism and ADHD. It reflects a unique neurodivergent experience, often marked by a mixture of intense focus and distraction, structure and spontaneity, social sensitivity and impulsivity.

As consultant psychiatrist Dr Khurram Sadiq (who lives with AuDHD himself) puts it, “It’s silence versus noise; structure versus chaos; repetition versus novelty; caution versus risk-taking.”

The AuDHD Experience

For those living with AuDHD, the world can feel like a constant tug-of-war. Where autism may encourage caution and routine, ADHD often pushes toward stimulation and risk. The result? A life filled with contradictions and challenges, but also great strengths.

Clinical psychologist Dr Fleur-Michelle Coiffait suggests that AuDHD has its own set of characteristics, not merely a blend of two diagnoses. These include:

  • Social challenges – Craving connection but struggling with cues or sensory overwhelm.

  • Inattention and hyperfocus – Distracted by the mundane, laser-focused on passions.

  • Sensory sensitivity – Over-responsive to lights, sounds, textures, or even food.

  • Impulsivity – Driven by restlessness or frustration when things don’t go as expected.

  • Stimming and fidgeting – Physical ways of regulating overwhelming emotions.

  • Emotional regulation struggles – A constant inner conflict that leads to burnout or masking.

Why Awareness Matters

Many people with undiagnosed AuDHD spend years feeling misunderstood, often labelled as lazy, awkward, over-sensitive, or even ‘too much’. These misconceptions can affect relationships, self-esteem, and mental health.

The long NHS waitlists for separate autism and ADHD assessments can further complicate diagnosis and support. Many find themselves researching independently and turning to online communities or going private for answers.

But understanding AuDHD is essential, not just for individuals and families, but for employers, educators, and communities. Recognising neurodivergent traits can help unlock potential and create more inclusive environments.

Supporting People with AuDHD: So how can we help people in Northamptonshire with AuDHD thrive?

  • Seek professional insight – Ideally from specialists trained in both autism and ADHD.

  • Embrace strengths – Neurodivergent people are often highly creative, innovative, and solutions-focused.

  • Foster inclusion – Create safe environments where individuals feel accepted, not judged.

  • Promote healthy lifestyles – Sleep, nutrition, movement, and social support all play vital roles.

  • Access community resources – Charities like the National Autistic Society and ADHD Foundation offer helpful guidance.

Final Thought: Neurodivergent people aren't broken—they're different. And that difference can be a gift, especially when supported, understood, and embraced.

At Elevate Northamptonshire, we’re committed to championing inclusion, raising awareness, and amplifying the voices of those in our community living with AuDHD. Because when we understand each other better, we build stronger businesses—and stronger communities.

If you're living with, supporting, or learning about AuDHD, we’d love to hear your story.

Thank you to Stefan Attrill for sharing this.
