Local Success Story: Local Mum’s Heroic Rescue Earns Rare Bravery Honour

Northampton’s own Chelsea Feole Evans is being awarded one of the country’s highest bravery honours—a Royal Humane Society Silver Medal, personally approved by Princess Alexandra—for saving a family of seven and their dog from a burning takeaway last December.

On the morning of December 5, 2023, Chelsea saw smoke billowing from Delush Burger House in Gold Street. Hearing children screaming, she rushed in, guided five young children to safety, then returned twice more to rescue their parents and the family dog. Speaking in the days after the incident, the then 30-year-old said it was her “mother’s instinct” that propelled her into the flaming, smoke-filled building.

Chelsea’s quick thinking and unwavering courage didn’t come without consequences—she later collapsed from smoke inhalation. Yet her only concern remained saving the family (and their adorable pup in a Christmas jumper!).

Andrew Chapman, Secretary of the Royal Humane Society, called Chelsea a “true heroine,” saying, “She put her life on the line and went into the burning building not once but three times. The Society’s Silver Medal is very rarely awarded, but if ever there was a case where it was deserved, this is it.”

Founded nearly 250 years ago, the Royal Humane Society stands as one of the premier national bodies—second only to the Crown itself—honouring bravery in saving human life. Chelsea’s story is proof positive of how extraordinary actions can happen anywhere, at any time, and how selfless courage continues to inspire us all.
