Local Success Story: SENsational: Dancing Toward Inclusivity and Hope With Inspirational Local Dance School

This summer, disability care provider SENsational is bringing the magic of Strictly Come Dancing to Northampton—while raising crucial funds for a brand-new cancer fitness charity. In collaboration with the Joanne Banham Dance Company (JDBC), Strictly SENsational will take to the stage at the Deco Theatre on June 29, inviting 12 contestants with learning disabilities to train for six weeks and then perform in two showcase events.

Following the success of previous Strictly-style fundraisers by JDBC—where more than £20,000 was raised for Cancer Research—the team is now aiming to channel the same excitement into supporting the Tor-Rox foundation. This soon-to-launch charity was founded by Victoria “Tor” Spencer, who has been living with cancer since 2015. Her vision is to help people undergoing cancer treatment access free or low-cost exercise programmes to improve their quality of life.

SENsational—founded by Emily in September 2023—combines care for children and adults with special educational needs (SEN) and a love for performing arts. Emily’s background in professional dance led her to work with Joanna Banham, principal of JDBC. Joanna, who has performed on shows like Dancing with the Stars Netherlands and Britain’s Got Talent, started delivering monthly workshops to SENsational participants in May 2024, teaching them popular ballroom and Latin dances such as the Jive and Cha Cha.

“It’s really joyful, and that’s what dancing is all about,” Joanna said. “They always have such great enthusiasm and energy.”

Bringing “Strictly” to the SEN Community

Strictly SENsational will give adults with learning disabilities from any local provision the chance to step into the spotlight. Contestants will not only learn new dance routines but also gain confidence, social skills, and a sense of accomplishment on stage. With the show open to the public, attendees will enjoy an inclusive environment celebrating both performance and charity.

How to Get Involved

Applications for Strictly SENsational are open until March, and the organisers are calling on eligible individuals aged 16+ to sign up and be part of this inspiring journey. All training is free, and participants will perform twice in front of a live audience at the Deco Theatre.
