Weekly Success Story: Cynthia Spencer Hospice: Big Charity Shop Relaunch

After a six-week makeover, Cynthia Spencer Hospice threw open the doors of its newly revamped Big Charity Shop on Saturday 24 May 2025. The Mayor of Northampton, Cllr Jane Birch, cut the ribbon, hailing the store as “a beacon of hope for our community.”

What changed?

  • Bigger, brighter, better: A total transformation has created a larger, open-plan retail floor with dedicated departments, a changing room and a homewares zone.

  • Treasure-trove appeal: Shoppers can now browse clearly-signed sections for clothing, accessories, books, toys, furniture and electricals.

  • Community buzz: Launch-day footfall was strong, with supporters shopping, donating and taking part in fundraising games.

Why it matters

  • Funding patient care: Retail income is a cornerstone of the hospice’s £2.2 million annual fundraising target – that’s over £6,000 every day. Every purchase, “whether £1 or £41,” helps nurses, therapists and the wider team deliver expert, compassionate care.

  • Circular economy: The store offers cost-conscious, eco-friendly shopping at a time when households are looking to stretch budgets and cut waste.
