Local Success Story: Giving Back Through Song and Community

Meet Chris Startup, founder of Project Sounds and its community choir, The Project Sing Choir, based in Ecton Village Hall. Established in June 2021, Chris and his partner Maud Carter set out with a vision: to help people discover their voices, boost their wellbeing, and build a strong sense of community.

Singing for Everyone

Chris believes that singing benefits mental health, and no prior experience is required to take part. Members gain confidence, improve their wellbeing, and form lasting connections through breathing exercises, vocal techniques, and the joy of singing in unison or harmony. Over time, the group has grown from just eight singers to around thirty, with new enrolments beginning in January.

Supporting Lung Health

Beyond the choir, Project Sounds provides support for individuals with lung conditions. Chris is a trained “singing for lung health” and “harmonica for lung health” practitioner, teaching people how to manage their conditions through these therapeutic musical activities. He collaborates with Asthma + Lung UK, aiming to help even more people benefit from singing and harmonica playing in the years to come.

A Community-Focused Approach

Everything Chris does is about giving back. Fundraising efforts often support The McCarthy-Dixon Foundation, a local charity. In early 2024, Chris received a Rose of Northamptonshire Award for his invaluable contributions across the county.

Looking Ahead

Having started in a field during the pandemic—before moving to Overstone Village Hall and eventually settling in Ecton—Chris says the village atmosphere and local pub really bring people together. The Project Sing Choir will perform at Easter, summer, and Christmas concerts throughout 2025, with a continued commitment to helping others through music.
