Local Success Story

Joe Smith, The Grumpy Gardener and Founder of Greanbase
Joe Smith, known to many as "The Grumpy Gardener," is a shining example of Northampton's entrepreneurial spirit and success. A former student at the University of Northampton, Joe’s journey from student to successful business owner is nothing short of inspiring. Following his TV appearance on BBC’s Dragon’s Den, Joe was featured as a poster boy for the university, spotlighting his achievements to prospective students.
Joe’s business, Greanbase, has deep roots in the local community. The company employs local talent in its office, ensuring that the benefits of its success are shared with Northampton residents. Wildlife conservation also plays a big part in Joe’s ethos. Through his Grumpy Gardener brand, any returned or imperfectly packaged food is donated to "Animals in Need," a local charity caring for wild birds, hedgehogs, and even cats and dogs.
Greanbase’s commitment to supporting local businesses is another factor in its success. The company actively trades with many other Northampton businesses, purchasing stock locally and working with a Northampton-based fulfilment centre, contributing around £500,000 annually to the local economy. Joe’s story is a testament to the power of staying rooted in your community while growing a successful business.
Joe and his team’s continued dedication to wildlife, local employment, and business collaboration make him a perfect example of the entrepreneurial drive transforming Northampton into a business powerhouse. We’re excited to see what’s next for The Grumpy Gardener and Greanbase!
